９０歳を越えた方々に、身近で使えるものを制作して頂きたい、この思いが私にはあった。
夏だったので「朝顔」は決めていた。しかし、そのまま絵に描くのでは題材にしかならない。ふと、「団扇」が思い浮かんだ。しかし、材料費はどうだろうと探すと、手頃な値段の材料が見つかった。
団扇の表と裏、２種類の絵が必要だ。１枚は朝顔の花を、２枚目は群生を描いて、用意した。画材は描きやすいように水彩にした。私の描いた絵は、いつも最初にサッとお見せするだけで、あとはお見せしない。その方の想像の自由を奪わないために。
朝顔は、日本人の風物詩だ、毎年夏に育ててらした方も多いだろう。楽しく談笑されながら絵が完成していく。
完成した絵は、私が団扇の形に糊で付けて出来上がり。きっとお部屋で朝顔が揺れていたにちがいない。
I had this desire to have those over ninety create something practical for everyday use.
As it was summer, I had decided on “morning glories”. But simply painting them would make them merely a subject. Suddenly, the “uchiwa” fan came to mind. Wondering about material costs, I searched and found reasonably priced supplies.
Two designs were needed: one for the front and one for the back of the fan. I prepared one featuring a single morning glory flower and another depicting a cluster. Watercolours were chosen for ease of use. I always show my own painting briefly at the start, then keep it hidden. This preserves the participants’ freedom of imagination.
Morning glories are a quintessential Japanese seasonal motif; many people likely grow them every summer. The painting took shape amidst cheerful conversation.
Once complete, I glued the painting onto the fan’s frame. Surely, morning glories must have swayed gently in their room.
