皆さんが大好きな動物、パンダ。誰もが知ってる愛らしい仕草、特徴的な色合い。
パンダを描いていただこうと思ったが、実際に連れて来ることはできない、よって写真を拡大してお渡しした。
何種類かのパンダの写真をお見せして、緑の色画用紙にパステルで描いていただく。そのまま真似て描くのではなく、ご自分の想像力も働かせて描いて頂きたかったが、実際には観察力の鋭さに、私の思い込みを恥じた。
こうあるべきという常識を、９０歳を越えた方々は軽々と超えていらっしゃった。
Everyone’s favourite animal, the panda. Those adorable mannerisms and distinctive colouring that everyone recognises. I wanted you to draw a panda, but obviously I couldn’t bring one along, so I enlarged a photograph and handed it out.
I showed them several panda photographs and asked them to draw them in pastel on green coloured paper. I had hoped they wouldn’t simply copy the images but would also use their own imagination. In reality, however, their keen powers of observation made me ashamed of my own preconceptions.
These individuals, all over ninety years old, effortlessly transcended the conventional notion of how things ought to be.
